William Lampen-Smith
Professional Profile
I'm William, an Architectural Graduate originating from Auckland, New Zealand. I completed my studies in 2020, at the University of Auckland with a double Masters in Architecture and Urban Design. During my Thesis studies I explored the Urban Rehabilitation & Revitalisation of an Open Pit Gold Mine and the small town it supported (Martha Mine, Waihi, NZ). This was done through the split perspective of two streams of investigation; the lens of Surrealistic interpretation & a Systems-Dynamics framework. Interrogating how Art, Architecture, & System Dynamics can be used to view the site as an assemblage of foundational flows. During my time working for ASC Architects and Buchan, I have developed a strong background in Master Planning, Narrative Development, Concept Design, Presentation Skills and Documentation. I have had the opportunity to engage and contribute to a range of diverse projects, including Commercial Airline Jet-Bases, Equestrian Stables, Residential Developments, and Mall reinventions & expansions. Proficient in Revit, AutoCAD, Adobe Suite, and Hand Drawing, I have been able to integrate into projects and adapt quickly. Most recently I have been working on notable large-scale Mall reinvention and expansions in the Philippines. My passion lies in sustainable system-dynamics led design, and I aspire to lead in the industry of regenerative architecture. Beyond architecture. I integrate my love for surreal art and Permaculture, and am currently developing a small scale perennial food forest. Below is my portfolio and a snapshot of the collection of my works to give an overview of my skills and experiences within the field of Architecture.

Starting the role early February 2021, I worked on designing and documenting a showroom instillation for an apartment and terrace house development in Auckland. Over the course of the year, I have worked through the entirety of the Building Consent process. This included producing full GA, Scheduling, and Interior sets of documentation for both the Terrace and Apartment sections of the project. I was also a member of the web development team re-designing the company’s website, social image, and branding. Finishing off my time at ASC Architects, I worked on an international project located in Changsha, China. An adaptive re-use project, focused on the renovation of a run-down resort into a university. My role on this project was to develop the initial narrative and concept design of the University. This was done utilizing a combination of hand sketches and SketchUp modelling.

This position comprised of two roles in the research and analysis of the Hobsonville Point residential development in West Auckland. The project was a part of a research grant to the school of Architecture and Planning. My first role was completing a streetscape survey of the development, with a focus on the implementation of policy, design, and planning of the 75% complete development. Once this analysis was completed, I moved onto another role, leading a small team focused on the development of a parametric digital model of the development. This was done with the use of Rhino and Grasshopper scripting. Parametric capability was built into the modelling in order to provide an analytical model to gather data for further research papers into the successfulness and replicability of Hobsonville Point development.

In 2022 I launched my own business selling originals and prints of my artwork. After developing my website, selling at markets, and producing prints, I completed my first artwork commission in 2023. Contacted through my website, I developed in collaboration with the clients a concept. Over the course of 4 months, while working and travelling to the Philippines, developed and completed the A2 piece. Based in lineage, the piece is comprised of three maps, Auckland, where the client is from, one of Venlo, Netherlands (where his father was from), and Inverness, Scotland (where his mother originated). Incorporated into the maps and border, were numerous references to his family history, their pets, architectural references, and native plants & animals from the respective countries.

Concept Design.
Over my time working at Buchan, I have had the pleasure of working accross a wide range of projects, primarily within the first half of design process. Across Bulk & location, Narrative Development, and Concept Design / Development.
Mall Reinventions & Expansions in the Philippines :
Over the course of the past year I have been part of a team working on large mall reinventions and expansions in the Philippines. Developing these through the masterplanning, concept, and Schematic Design Phases (to 50% SD, then passing over to local consultants for documenting).
Having the opportunity to work on these projects has given me invaluable experience in the development of conceptual narratives for large scale projects. And then carrying these throughout the masterplanning, design, and presentation of these projects.
I worked as part of an international inter-studio team, with the Senior Associate of the projects located in Sydney, and members of the team across Australia and New Zealand.
After completing a mall reinvention project in Cebu, and assisting on another in Makarti, Metro Manila. I began work on a 29,000m2 GFA expansion of the Cebu Mall.
Working closely with the Project Lead in Sydney, my role was to prepare and produce all presentation documents, developing a Revit massing & area studies off of layout sketches. As the project progressed, I also worked in creating early renderings & perspective sketches as well as producing Revit documentation as we moved through the masterplanning and concept stages for the expansion.
The next project that I worked on was a 50,000m2 GFA expansion of a Mall in Angeles City, Pampanga, Philippines.
With this project, I took the role of managing a small team to develop the conceptual narrative and masterplanning of the expansion. Still working closely with the Senior Associate in Sydney, we had two trips to visit the existing mall and workshop with the client group.
This project has been a massive expansion of my abilities, giving me invaluable experience in working in large-scale international commercial projects, team management, concept development, mall & commercial masterplanning, and presenting.
Working collaboratively in tight deadlines, we produced drawings and documentation utilising Revit, Enscape, Indesign, Autocad, Photoshop, and hand drawings on the Ipad.
Commercial Airline Jet-Base Masterplanning :
For this project, Buchan was approached to perform a master planning analysis of their jet base located at Auckland International Airport. Undertaking a right-sizing and future-proofing masterplanning exercise. Identifying key precincts and land uses. Engaging with key stakeholders throughout their jet base operations team to find symmetries and alignment between uses.
After completing the analysis and ‘Blue-Sky’ Planning for the Auckland International Airport Jet-Base. We went through the same analysis process for their Christchurch International Airport Jet-Base.
With these two projects, I worked alongside a senior associate who advised me as I completed the in-depth analysis of the client’s operations and assets on the sites, and led client meetings. initial large-scale hand drawn masterplans were then produced and subsequently developed into Auto-Cad documents and presentation packages to be presented to the clients Board.
Following the completion of the Auckland Jet-Base Masterplan Buchan was accepted into the Clients ‘Architects Panel’ - a prestigious accomplishment for our firm.
Pukekohe Stables :
The scope of this project was to reassess the Pukekohe racecourse holdings, performing an analysis and masterplan of the site capacity. Creating a staged program for the development of 380 additional stables, walkers, and equine pool.
Residential Masterplanning :
Within this project my role was to assist the project lead, creating staged masterplans and stables layouts based on benchmarks throughout Australasia. To create the presentations for this project, I utilised Morpholio Trace to produce accurate Master Planning options, and then compiled within InDesign.

Research Question:
How can architecture, through a serious visionary application of natural capital and ecosystem-services theories, reframe current approaches to the rehabilitation of compromised sites contributing to creatively envision a comprehensive social, cultural and environmental reconciliation strategy that transforms the criticalities of damaged left-over industrial sites into key elements of a reconquest of relationality that, unlocks the power of imagination and desire?
Abstract:
In New Zealand, the exploitation of natural capital for industrial production leaves a growing number of dead sites that harm local ecosystems, heavily affecting their environment and communities. Communities, that have historically relied on the economic and social support that the operation of these sites once provided. Current approaches to the reintegration of dead sites fail to accurately identify the breadth of potential solutions and settle for the minimum mitigation of environmental damage, transforming into stagnant and unproductive sites. This thesis argues that regenerative design and natural capitalism thinking could follow surrealistic and visionary paths to reintegrate dead sites back into the changed social, cultural, and economic systems of their communities. Such an approach envisions a comprehensive social, cultural, and environmental reconciliation strategy that transforms the criticalities of damaged leftover industrial sites into key elements of an ecological reconquest of relationality. This strategy combines two distinct streams of investigation, the first of which uses a speculative lens to revise and re-envision current sustainable and ‘pseudo-sustainable’ techniques, concepts, and technologies of regeneration. The second stream uses a system-dynamics approach to ideate possible design strategies that lead to a sustainable reintegration of the dead sites. Thus, the principle objective of this thesis is to challenge current approaches to the redevelopment of key industrial sites by unlocking the potentials and possibilities of their urban, cultural, and ecological landscapes for the radical rejuvenation and reintegration of these sites as anchors for positive development. This research resulted in a system of design that challenges current approaches, utilising surreal techniques to break assumptions and present new avenues of design research.
